Beauty & The Beast at GCHS

Graves County High school is presenting Disney’s award-winning musical Beauty and the Beast. General admission shows are at 7 pm on Friday, November 17, and at 2:30 pm on Saturday, November 18. Season Events Series tickets will be honored and reserved seating will be available for the 7 pm performance on November 18.

This musical is directed by 2nd year GCHS teacher Makenzie Kauffman. She teaches the musical theatre class and directs the fall musical each year. She also teaches Women's Choir, Chamber Choir, Concert Choir, Show Choir, and History and Appreciation of the Visual and Performing Arts. Last year’s successful fall musical was “The Pajama Game.”

"Putting on a production of a well-known show is not easy, as there are certain expectations that come along with it,” Kauffman told me. “These young performers show their dedication and passion for musical theatre, and this show, in every single rehearsal. Directing this production has been an absolute treat for me, and I cannot wait to see these students shine even brighter come show time!"

Belle - played by Senior Felicity Spurgeon.

"This show has absolutely made my senior year and I can't wait to share it with everyone else,” Spurgeon told me. “The cast is amazing and we've all worked so hard to put this together. My favorite part is the Be Our Guest number."

The Beast - played by Sophomore Noah Saxon.

"This show is one of the best things to have happened to me in a while!” said Saxon “I love being a part of this great project!"

Mrs. Potts will be played by Junior Emmy Shoulta, and Senior Gabbie Lamb will be Cogsworth.

"I think my favorite part in the whole show is specifically... the kick line!" Shoulta told me.

"My favorite part is yelling not to do the kick line... then ending up in it." Lamb responded.

Junior Tate Keeling takes on the role of LeFou.

"I love being in the show!” Keeling quipped. “And my favorite part is performing with this great cast."

Lumiere - played by Senior Ryan Loaiza.

"This beast of a show includes adventure and entertainment in a tale as old as time!” Loaiza added. “It's going to be lit (get it- because I'm a candle), so come see us!"

Other cast members include: Narrator - Dakota Dunn, Young Prince - Nathan Smith, Old Beggar Woman - Alyssia Brow, Maurice – Michael Black, Gaston – Evan Williams, D’Arque – Allyson Pair, Babette – Mollie Beck, Chip – Rebekah Brown, Madame La Grande Da Bouche – Julianna Sims

Beauty and the Beast: The Musical

The music for Beauty and the Beast was composed by Alan Menken, with lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice. It’s based on a book by Linda Woolverton, that was adapted from Walt Disney Pictures' Academy Award-winning 1991 animated musical film of the same name . The original story is a classic French fairy tale by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont, also called Beauty and the Beast.

Each adaptation follows basically the same plot. It is the story of a cold-blooded prince who has been magically transformed into an unsightly creature as punishment for his selfish ways. To revert into his true human form, the Beast must first earn the love of a bright, beautiful young woman whom he has imprisoned in his enchanted castle before it is too late.
