A highly respectable 20 submissions were received this year in the 2018 WKMS Battle of the Bands. They were reviewed by a committee of WKMS music hosts and volunteers who narrowed the field down to nine. Next followed online judging by WKMS' listeners. There are now just four finalists - three were chosen by social media and one is a "Judge's Choice."
Voting ended at midnight on March 18, and the four finalists were announced on WKMS Sounds Good radio program this past Monday morning.
The 2018 finalists in the Battle of the Bands Competition are The Old Spirits, Patrick Harvey & The Wallbangers, Peachy Mae and A Quilt City Hustle. Each will be performing three songs - and an encore for whomever wins - in a live concert at Maiden Alley Cinema at 7pm, on Thursday, March 29.
Evan Dodd, Jeff Gregory, and Samuel Parker are The Old Spirits, a power trio from west Tennessee. This band plays an eclectic mixture of original music with a sound that is all their own. The Old Spirits put on a one of a kind show featuring powerful vocals, harmonies, penetrating lyrics, and superb musicianship. Come to a show and experience them for yourself! Patrick Harvey & The Wallbangers is an Americana/Folk/Bluegrass band from western Kentucky who prides themselves on banging walls and breaking strings. The band consists of Patrick Harvey, Bryan Hawkins, Mike Eddings, and Alicia Parish. Check out their Facebook page!
A Quilt City Hustle hales from Paducah and describes themselves as a Pop/Funk/River Junk band. Band members are Tim Green on bass, Roger Norment playing drums/percussion, Scott Hall on trumpet, Cody Waggoner, guitar, and Seth Helton also on guitar. The winning singer/songwriter will receive many incentives such as a recording session and promotion package valued at over $3,500. This includes; a 4-day recording session at Time on the String's sound studio, (must be used before Dec 31); a spotlight on the band at wkms.org and in other press releases; publicity materials, etc. sent to newspapers, magazines, websites and more around the region; 75 underwriting spots on WKMS to use to promote upcoming shows, CD releases, band Facebook pages, etc. throughout 2018; the opportunity to perform at future Music at MAC event or CD release party; and a main-stage performance slot at the Lower Town Arts & Music Festival May 18th or 19th!
