Paducah's Pet Whisperer - Dena Rowe

This week’s iMeet loves animals and birds of every type but her business, FurKidz Pet Hotel, Spa & Daycamp, focuses on our special family pets. She’s a single mom to Lexie – who wants to take over the world, (we mean the family business). Dena Rowe is doing just what she has always wanted to and she’s loving it.  iMeet this farm-owning, outdoor-loving, scuba diving enthusiast!

Welcome to iMeet, Dena. We’re excited to learn all about you…

Happy New Year! I grew up in the small, rural town of Pine Knot, Kentucky. I have been an animal lover all my life – in fact I’ve been rescuing animals before I even knew what rescuing meant!

After graduating high school, I attended the University of Kentucky majoring in Animal Science. I have a bit of wanderlust in me, so I took a break from college and moved to Florida. I attended Tigers Eye Exotic Animal School in Oviedo, Florida. I learned how to care for, and train, Macaws, snakes, tarantulas, birds of prey (including Bald Eagles), wolves, lions, leopards, tigers, endangered Florida Panthers, and helped raise cubs of various wild cats. It was fun!

Eventually, I got homesick for Kentucky and I moved to western Kentucky. I completed my bachelor’s degree in Animal Science and went on to get my Master of Science degree - both at Murray State University. (I worked my way through school in their IT department.)

Tell us about your business, Furkidz…

In 2012, I decided to go into business for myself and spent the next year and a half researching and creating a business plan for Furkidz Pet Hotel, Spa & Daycamp. By December 2013, Furkidz was a reality!

We are Paducah's only Pet Hotel and Spa. As well as boarding pets overnight we offer day-camping for canines and usually have six or more come each day to play! We are located behind Flamingo Row on Hansen Road in Paducah.

To date, we have over 3,000 “Fur-kidz” grace our business! In December 2016, we were awarded the Better Business Bureau award.

You’ve got a daughter. Is she as smart and independent as you?

I am a single mother raising my seven-year-old daughter Lexie - who wants to take over the world - um, I mean Furkidz when she's 10! Lexie is a very loving, beautiful, smart, independent and headstrong little girl with a love for people, as well as animals.

And we hear you own a menagerie – we mean a farm…

Lexie and I live on a small, 10 acre farm where we have rescued horses, donkeys, dogs, cats, goats, a snake, chickens and turkeys.

Wow, you are a busy lady! What does a typical day look like for you?

A typical day for me is to rise early and get my daughter ready for school. Then it's off to the pastures to feed and water all our critters.

Once Lexie is off to school, it's on to Furkidz to do what I was born to do, care for animals and treat them like my own.

What’s the best part of your job – what’s the worst?

My favorite part of my business is educating our customers about their pets and getting to play with them.

My least favorite is bookwork. Although it is necessary, I'd rather be outside playing with the pack!

So you’re an outdoor girl…

I love doing anything outdoors – I farm and cut hay. I have several tractors and love to spend time in them.

When I have time, I like to scuba dive. I have been scuba diving throughout the Caribbean and Hawaii.

Are you looking forward to 2018?

I'm so excited about the New Year. Big, wonderful changes are going to be taking place in my professional life, so stay tuned!

What’s your favorite movie?

My favorite movie has to be the Lord of the Rings trilogy along with the Hobbit trilogy. In fact I’m such a fan that I went to New Zealand several years ago and toured where Peter Jackson filmed the Lord of the Rings movies. I absolutely loved New Zealand and all the nature trails.

Well, we’re really glad we asked you to be our iMeet this week, Dena. We wish you every success in 2018 and can’t wait to share your Furkidz success.
