Touch a Truck is a free, annual event where kids, teachers, and families can see and touch approximately two dozen types of vehicles. It’s a wonderful day where kids can touch and see all kinds of larger equipment. Typically vehicles include a helicopter, fire truck, ambulance, tow truck, concrete mixer, dump truck, garbage truck, trolley, and police car. Participants also get to meet the people who operate those vehicles on a daily basis.
“Touch a Truck is a great event for families and younger school-age children,” said Recreation Superintendent Amie Clark. “It’s fun and hands on. The children get to climb in the vehicles, and sometimes grab the steering wheel and honk the horn. We have been hosting this event for many years and are happy to be able to provide this one-of-a-kind opportunity to the community.”
Clark believes that Touch a Truck is one of her favorite events More than 500 children have been able to take part in this event each year since it started. She enjoys listening to the drivers talk to the usually wide-eyed children about these large pieces of equipment and how they work.
School and church groups are asked to call 270.444.8508 to pre-register. Individuals do not need to pre-register. Bus and public parking will be available in the downtown parking lot across from the former Whaler’s Catch building. Bus drivers are asked to drop students off at 2nd and Jefferson Streets.
The Kentucky Recreation & Park Society recognized Touch a Truck with the Outstanding Program Award in 2013.
