If you’re a runner, you don’t want to miss the longest running half marathon in western Kentucky. The Murray Calloway Endowment for Healthcare’s Annual Murray Bank Half Marathon will be held Saturday, April 14.
The Murray Bank Half Marathon is organized by The Murray-Calloway Endowment for Healthcare. 2018 will mark the eighth anniversary of the event. The race offers three distances: a 13.1 mile race (U.S. Track and Field certified course), two- person relay race and a 5K run/walk.
All proceeds from this years race go to support operations at the Anna Mae Owen Residential Hospice House, which opened in November of 2016. The facility offers end-of-life care in a home-like setting to area residents in partnership with Murray-Calloway County Hospital’s existing hospice unit.
This year’s event will host a “Court Square Salute”, with participation from the 101st Airborne and First Responders.
The race will also feature a Hospice Heroes designation, in which runners will raise funds in support of the Anna Mae Owen Residential Hospice House. Participants in this event will receive a specially designed running shirt to recognize them as a Hospice Hero.
Other features of the 2018 Murray Half Marathon include cash prizes, new and improved race shirt, limited edition finisher medals, and the Race Expo on Friday, April 13th.
New this year, the runners’ food tent will be sponsored by US Foods, runners and spectators will be able to track their progress during the half marathon using the RaceJoy app, and footage of the race will be projected from a drone to a huge screen, provided by Sportable Scoreboards, in the parking lot of the J. Stuart Poston Center for Health and Wellness.
A total of $1,000 will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers in the half marathon. $100 will be awarded to the first male, female and coed teams and a total of $300 will be awarded to the top 3 male and female finishers of the 5K race.
Runners interested in participating may sign up at MurrayHalfMarathon.org and several discount levels are offered based on how early the participant registers. Course information and other important details are also available on the site.
There is nothing that warms a runner's heart more than the volunteers and family members on the course encouraging the runners. I’m sure you want to be in your pajamas at 7am when the runners take off, and that’s ok!
Come on out and cheer on your runner friends. Your crazy outfit will only make them smile and they will know that you came out for them. Runners participate in events like this to celebrate all their hard training. Bands, dance teams, cheer teams, clubs, and church groups are welcome. If you’d like to join a group, contact them and they will match you with one.
All runners will be given the opportunity to vote for their favorite spirit team. The spirit teams with the most votes will be awarded prize money for their favorite non-profit organization.
