Art can help individuals express their emotions, their dreams, and their sense of self. Thanks to the art program at Easter Seals Western Kentucky (ESWKY), adults with disabilities can also experience the benefits of art. The 12th Annual Heart & Soul Auction celebrates the growth of the art program and the students' accomplishments. The auction will be held at Walker Hall on June 16th from 6- 9pm.
The Heart & Soul Art Auction finances the adult art program at Easter Seals. Many of the live auction artworks are collaborations between the adult students at Easter Seals and local and regional professional artists. This year’s featured artist is Easter Seals artist Parker Fralix.
The event features both a live and a silent auction as well as live music, hors d’oeuvres, and great desserts. This event is tailored toward adults and features a cash bar. Leave the kids at home and enjoy a great date night while supporting a great cause!
What adds to the very special ambiance of this event is that many of the artists themselves are present. They assist in showing the pieces during the auction and this allows those bidding to meet the artist and see who created the work.
Thanks to local artists and on-site instructors Diana Davenport and Deb Lyons, the art program was added to the Easter Seals program over 13 years ago. It’s a favorite among students and around 60 currently participate. The program offers group classes and one-on-one art sessions Monday through Friday.
ESWKY 2017 Art Committee Chair and previous Art Director, Marilee Jones views the art as therapy and has noticed that students who participate exhibit a heightened sense of self-esteem and self-awareness. Art helps these individuals reach their fullest potential.
The students at Adult Easter Seals Center work with current Art Director, Anthony Woodruff, to figure out how to meet their art related goals. They explore various 2-D and 3-D media to discover personal preferences and style. Students have the opportunity to work in a variety of materials and techniques including oil, acrylic and water colors, ceramics, jewelry, mixed media, sculpture and printing.
Every year, visiting professional artists collaborate with the adult artists to create wonderful artworks, many which are part of the live auction. Sometimes the professional artists work one-on-one with the students and other times they create a piece in which many students participate.
If you own a business and would like to get involved, Easter Seals is still accepting business sponsorships. They hope to raise $15,000 this year so they can provide art for every client who wants to participate.
