PaBREWcah, a signature fundraising event for the Paducah Symphony Orchestra, has become one of our most popular local events. It is returning for its third year with a few changes to the schedule and location - and even more great beer! Paducah’s got something brewing, and iLove It!
Each year as a way to give back to the community, the Leadership Paducah class selects a community project to benefit a local, non-profit, Chamber member. This year's project is Saving the Silver Screen, presented by Leadership Paducah Class 31. It’s on June 9 and will feature the ever popular Big Bang Dueling Pianos. iSupport banging the ivories to support the Columbia!
On June 9, renowned musicians and visual artists will perform to benefit the Marshall Strong Rotary Fund. Noon to Midnight: Rock for a Cause will help families affected by the shooting at Marshall County High School. It’s at Paducah Beer Werks and will feature a string of concerts from 10 different musical groups and solo artists. iLove It when a community comes together and raises money for local families!
The Lower Town Arts & Music Festival (LTAMF) is a regional two-day celebration of art, music, food, beer and wine all from a 350 mile radius of Paducah. Its all happening this weekend on May 18 & 19. But the fun starts early and you can play until its late. The kick-off and after parties are shaping up to be one heck of a good time! iLove It when I can party all weekend long at LTAMF!
Iron Mom started in 2011 and has steadily grown over the years. This year’s race will begin at Water & Jefferson Street, Paducah, at 7:00am on May12. Iron Mom is probably the largest ever fits type in our area. Last year there were 700 runners and organizers are hoping to have an even bigger turn out this year.
The event raised $20,000 in its initial year and has progressively added about $5,000 each year to its fundraising efforts. Proceeds go to support the Family Service Society (FSS) - an organization that serves as a resource in times crisis to the people of Paducah/McCracken County.
Family Service Society has been meeting the challenge of serving our community since 1927. FSS services include assistance with food, clothing, utilities, medications, dental, eyeglasses, household goods, personal hygiene items and Christmas food. This event is sponsored by Lourdes/Mercy Health.
Another Mother Runner
The half marathon is on a loop course with both the start and finish in downtown Paducah. This year’s route is the same as in years past and features start/finish on Jefferson, between Water & 2nd. Runners will be right in front of the “Wall to Wall” murals at the Ohio River.
The course offers an opportunity for runners to enjoy Paducah’s beautiful neighborhoods and continues to showcase Paducah by running along Jefferson Street, through the Greenway Trail, Bob Noble Park, and historic downtown and Lower Town.
All finishers of the half marathon will receive a custom medal. Relay finishers will receive a keychain medal. The top three overall male and female, and the top three master’s male and female will all receive individual awards. There will also be awards for the top three in 10 year age groups and in teams: Top three 2-person teams, 4-person teams in open division, top female only 2-person team and top female only 4-person team.
Walkers are welcome but must be able to keep an 18-minute-mile pace to complete the half marathon. There is a four hour course limit. Roads will reopen and the course will not be supported past 11 am. Walkers/Runners on the course must move to the sidewalks and obey all traffic signals.

Runners can pick up their packets on Friday, May 11 from 10am - 6pm at the Paducah Convention Center (lobby/foyer area) located at 1 Executive Blvd.
Help a Mother Out
If you would like to be a part of the event, please complete and submit the Iron Mom volunteer form. The success of this event is credited to the outstanding efforts of the volunteers. Volunteers are needed to help at the packet pick-up on Friday night as well as during the race on Saturday. Various volunteer duties include water stations, traffic coordination, cheering stations, etc. Coordinators guarantee volunteering at this event will inspire you.

The race is always better when there’s a crowd to cheer you on. Spectator groups are encouraged to be there and make the Iron Mom a fun event for the runners. Remember that groups must officially register to be eligible for prizes. There is no fee for spectators. A $300 cash grand prize will be given for Best Overall Group at the awards ceremony after the race.
While you’re there…
Runners and spectators will get to experience some of Paducah's culture near the Start/Finish at Paducah’s Farmers' Market. Vendors will be selling many homegrown products, made right here in our region, including produce, baked goods, soap, and other artisan goods. Iron Mom will also have a booth set up on Jefferson Street facing the Farmers’ Market with race merchandise. There will be food vendors such as Burrito Shack. You can even get a treat at the Paducah Bank Wow ice cream truck!
Maiden Alley Cinema (MAC) is getting ready to celebrate their 4th Annual Derby Party this Saturday, May 5. Of course everything is going to be Derby themed this year including the food. Highwater Fresh Bar (located at 224 Broadway) will host a delicious spread. Everyone who attends the party will get to take home a commemorative glass.
There will be lots of mint juleps, signature Derby themed cocktails and wine on hand. As well as a variety of soft drinks.
MAC is very excited to partner with the Paducah Bourbon Society for this event.
Dance to Soul Dog!
Entertainment will be provided by local favorites, Soul Dog, so you’ll be dancing all day long! Soul Dog was formed in 2010 and began playing venues in the Paducah region in 2011. The band has regularly played Porkstock, Lowertown Arts Festival, Harrah's Metropolis, 4th of July Celebrations in Mayfield and at the Carson Center as well as being active in the bar/restaurant venues of Paducah and Murray. Soul Dog’s name is of course inspired by the music they play - great soul Music by artists such as Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave, Al Green, Smokey Robinson, The Temptations and more. Some classic rock and Soul Dog originals rounds out the sets.

The food will be served in Max's courtyard during the start of the event, and then guests will move to the Maiden Alley Cinema lobby for dessert and the BIG race on the BIG screen. The event will begin at 1pm and will conclude after the final race.
Derby Hat Contest
Don’t forget to bring your Derby hats for the hat contest and your wallet for the live & silent auctions – because this is a fundraising event! The auction items are going to be fun and include themed packages including a mixed media workshop at Ephemera, a birthday party at MAC, video games on the big screen, a historic downtown tour with Fowler Black and dinner with Paducah Mayor, Brandi Harless.
Organizers are also auctioning off an original Tim Jaeger painting. You won’t want to miss one of our favorite local comedians and radio personalities, Mr. Todd Holloman, will be conducting the live auction

Each year the event grows and aids in raising much needed operating support for Maiden Alley Cinema. Organizers are expecting a bigger crowd for this year’s event. This year’s Earth Day Celebration at WKCTC will take place on April 28 from 11 am to 5 pm near the college’s Haws Gym.
“We invite everyone to campus for crafts, a cooking demonstration, an obstacle course, a ‘life-sized Operation Game,’ and more!” said Bobby Lee, WKCTC Sustainability Project coordinator and biology professor. “We will have numerous learning opportunities including exhibits about hybrid vehicles, bee hives, animal conservation, Kentucky bats and marine chemistry. There will be fun, games and contests for kids.”
“WKCTC faculty, staff, and students and Earth-friendly community groups such as Watershed Watch, Land Between theLakes and Clarks River Wildlife Refuge will be help make the event a day to remember. This is an opportunity to learn more about what is going on locally and simply meet and enjoy life on Earth,” said Lee.
The day’s cooking demonstration begins at 11:30 am. Local bands will begin playing at 1pm. Come out and listen to The Legendary Jack Martin & Good Company, The Melungeons, Art Thieves and Barely Blue.
The college will also have a booth to collect new children’s sneakers for the Scholar House, which is located near the WKCTC campus.
WKCTC’s Kitchens Café will be the food vendor for the day.
If it rains, the activities will be moved into Haws Gym.
Earth Day, which began in 1970, is celebrated annually in April with events worldwide in support of the environment and to raise awareness for the environmental protection and care of the planet. Like WKCTC, many communities’ Earth Day celebrations are part of Earth Week, an entire week of activities.

This year’s Paducky Derby is being held at 3pm on April 21 on Noble Park Pond. Now these aren’t real ducks of course, they are “rubber duckies” - and they are a sight to see! So, what are you waiting for - sponsor a racing duck, help a local non-profit, and win a money prize!
Each duck adopted will go directly to saving, building and changing the lives of those affected by domestic violence. Last year’s event raised over $46,000 and over 8,000 ducks were sold. Organizers are working hard to get 10K ducks adopted this year.
The day of the event hundreds of people came to watch Paducah Power use three different trucks to dump the ducks into the pond at Noble Park.
“The PaDucky Derby has become a favorite of our community,” said Mary Foley, Executive Director of the Merryman House. “It is such a great way to help support victims of domestic violence, while also bringing the community together around this fun event. This year, we hope to raise more than ever to support our ever-growing organization. We hope folks will consider adopting a single duck for 5 bucks or a flock for 50.00! There is a place for everyone.”
All proceeds from the Paducky Derby will benefit the Merryman House, a non-profit organization which offers both residency and outreach services to meet the needs of victims of intimate partner abuse and their dependents as they strive to live free of violence in their home. The Merryman House has become a comprehensive advocacy and support center that is devoted to addressing the comprehensive needs of survivors.
Everyone who adopts a duck, whether online, in the mail, at a Paducky Derby booth or in a sponsoring business, is entered into what they call E-Quack - a database that stores all of the information.
Tag numbers are automatically and randomly assigned. Organizers want to make sure that no duck is taking steroids and the race is not fixed, so to ensure the integrity of the race, tag numbers are never given out. Rest assured, however, that all of the ducks you have adopted will be in the water.
If all the ducks have not been adopted by Derby Day, it means that a lucky adopter can still adopt up to an hour prior to the Derby. Their names will be placed at random into the mix, next to a number that does not already have a name by it. Anyone can adopt until an hour before the race begins, as long as the Derby is not sold out.
Pick up a Quack Pack!
Ducks are now officially available for adoption online. There is also a Quack Pack of six ducks for $25 or Flock of Ducks for $50 that includes 12 ducks. Ducks can be purchased at the “Paducky Derby” Facebook Page, as well as the Paducky Derby website at duckrace.com/paducah, or at upcoming duck adoption venues.
Ducks will be sold at Kentucky Oaks Mall from 10 am – 6 pm on March 24 and April 7. They will also be selling ducks at the Expo Center during Quilt Week on April 18-20.
The grand prize is $1000 and $500 for second. This year is the first year for a team prize. If you are one of the winners, the Merryman House will contact you using the information you provided with your duck adoption. You do not need to be present to win, but, seriously, why would you want to miss this?
