Where can you find art and artists this weekend? At the first ever outdoor painting event hosted by the Art Guild of Paducah – Paducah Plein Air. On Saturday June 1, starting at 8 am, artists from both near and far will gather to paint scenes and buildings around Downtown Paducah and Lower Town.
What is a “Plein Air” event? “These are events in which the artists paint what they see,” explained Charlotte Erwin, President of The Paducah Art Guild. “The architecture of buildings, the Lower Town Arts District, the landscape of our beautiful riverfront….the possibilities are endless!”
This is a completely outdoors painting event. Artists will be located downtown around the Yeiser Art Center on 2nd and Broadway. You can also find artists in Lower Town around Etcetera Coffee House on 6th and Monroe, between Madison and Monroe Streets. As they work, artists will be available to talk with spectators and answer any questions they may have.
Plein Air events are attended by traveling artists as well as the locals. Visitors can see a wide variety of styles and techniques when walking from artist to artist. “Don’t be shy,” Erwin said. “These artists travel from town to town to participate in Plein Air events and they love to talk with the crowds.”
An awards ceremony will be held from 4 - 7 PM, where judges will carefully consider the skill and beauty of each submitted piece. There will be 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes, as well as other awards like The ‘People’s Choice’ and ‘Committee’ awards. There will be light refreshments served for the public and Texas Roadhouse has donate a buffet dinner for the artists.
“Many cities host Plein Air events. I thought, why doesn’t Paducah have one?” Erwin told me. “It’s very common for artists to travel to events like this. We hope to make this wonderful opportunity into a big annual event in Paducah.”
The Art Guild of Paducah would also like to thank Michael’s Craft Store, Paducah Bank, Ephemera, Guerrilla Painter, and Texas Roadhouse for their generous donations.
