The Grand Rivers Chamber of Commerce and Professional Fishing Guide Jim Doom are proud to present a free family event this Saturday, Saturday, June 1.  Bring your fishermen, ages 2 through 12, to Little Lake, which is part of Lake Barkley. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

“We want families to come enjoy a relaxed, laid back day and catch some fish!” Said Brian McDonald, Executive Director of Tourism for Grand Rivers. It’s a fun day for both the Chamber and all volunteers involved. We get to share the great outdoor activities offered by Grand Rivers and The Lakes areas.”

There will be three competing age groups: 2-5 years, 6-7 years, and 8-12. Smaller children can be assisted by parents or a volunteer. Awards will be given in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in three categories: Biggest Fish, Most Fish Caught, and Most Turtles Caught.

iPlayTournament founder Jim Doom told me, “Somebody always catches a bunch of turtles!”

No need to panic if you don’t have fishing gear or experience – it’s all provided. Fishing poles, hooks, bobbers, and any other necessities will be provided by The KY Department of Fish & Wildlife. The Grand Rivers Chamber of Commerce will provide all the bait.

Volunteers from The KY Department of Fish & Wildlife will be on hand to bait hooks, take fish off the hooks, untangle your line, tell the kids what kind of fish they caught – you don’t have to do anything except have fun!

Typically around 35 - 40 kids participate, but there is always room for more! Don’t run off once the Bluegill and Bass are caught, because ATMOS Energy provides a free cookout for everyone. Hamburgers, hot dogs, and chips are all provided by ATMOS and the Grand Rivers Chamber provides drinks.

iPlayFamily members over 12 years old are still more than welcome to enjoy fishing, but won’t be able to submit fish to compete for prizes. Fishing is fun no matter how old or young you are, and visitors of all ages are encouraged to participate.

Jim Doom started the tournament 13 years ago simply because he wanted kids to have fun fishing. With 14 years of professional fishing guide of experience, Doom enjoys introducing kids to the sport and watching them ‘reel in a big one’.

Participants can register beginning at 8:30 am with the tournament starting at 9 am. Lunch will be served at 11:30 pm. For questions about the event, contact the Grand Rivers Chamber of Commerce at 270.362.0152 or visit the Facebook event page.
