The lighted Dogwood Trail officially began last week with peak bloom expected throughout April. The trail showcases dogwood, Japanese maple, red bud and weeping cherry trees, as well as blooming garden areas and other flowering species.

The Dogwood Trail Ride is a leisure bicycle ride for all ages – lots of families and children come out to pedal together. You get to enjoy the beautiful neighborhoods of Paducah's west end and end up back at BikeWorld for a southern style "community dinner on the grounds." This year the event will take place on April 14 at 2.30pm and run until 4.45 pm. The potluck follows the ride.

This is a free, fun activity. In previous years, more than 250 cyclists rode the trail and returned to enjoy an afternoon of grilling and fellowship with other cyclists. Streets are marked, but not closed. Bicyclists and drivers will share the road and must follow traffic laws. Volunteers and BikeWorld employees will help to guide the riders on the route and stop cross traffic when appropriate.

The trail is marked on the roadway and you can ride at your own pace - which will be deliberately slow so that you can enjoy the beauty of Paducah in spring. Bike helmets are required and BikeWorld will have a support vehicle. Children should be accompanied by responsible adults. Riders may ride entire 10 mile route or any fraction of it.

BikeWorld owner Martha Emmons told me that this event is always a good time and the meal afterwards is amazing! “It's truly old fashioned potluck,” she said smiling. “BikeWorld provides the hamburgers, hot dogs, drinks, buns, tableware and condiments. Everyone else pitches in with other dishes and it always turns out there is plenty of food. Bring your favorite casserole, dessert or even chips."

“Desserts are always very popular as are cooked foods such as Deviled eggs, macaroni & cheese, corn pudding and any kind of potato casserole. There are lots chips consumed too! It's a hungry crowd so whatever is brought is usually eaten.”
