Book for Hope is a local charity whose mission is to raise funds for childhood cancer research and provide financial assistance for families with a child in active cancer treatment. The organization works with families in Western Kentucky and Southern Illinois.
They often travel several hours to access treatment, sometimes on a daily basis. It’s difficult for parents to maintain employment and many experience a loss of income. Expenses for treatments, transportation, keeping food on the table at home, house rent or payment, and utility bills are just some of the financial challenges faced by these families. All while they deal with the emotional turmoil of caring for a child with cancer.
One of the ways Book of Hope fulfills their mission is by fundraising through hosting various events throughout the year. Last year they held their first Just Imagine® Dinner, Dance, and Silent Auction. It was a huge success so they are holding a second one on May 3, at Rolling Hills Country Club in Paducah. Purchasing a table or seat for this Just Imagine® event is potentially helping to save the life of a child.
Board members have worked hard to make sure this event will be a fun-filled evening. All proceeds from this event will benefit children going through active cancer treatment. Doors open at 6pm and dinner will be served at 7pm. Music and dancing will start at 9pm. The silent auction will close at 9.30 pm.
On-air personality Chris Yu from WPSD will be the MC and music will be provided by Lew Jetton & 61 South. The Paducah Catering Company will cater a delicious meal. Board member Phyllis Long will speak about her beloved daughter, Ali Long who passed away in 2015 - the same year Book for Hope became a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit. Registration opens at 6:30 am for this run/walk which has 8am start time. Its $25 plus $1.50 tax to enter – the price includes a T-shirt. (Please note that shirts size XL will be an additional $2.)

Children with cancer are not simply statistics - they are real children living all around our area. Cancer is still the number one disease-related cause of death in children ages 0 to 19 years old. Last year, there were nearly 16,000 new cases of pediatric cancer. In the last thirty-five-years there have only been four FDA approved treatments for childhood cancer. This means children are receiving treatments that date back to the sixties. One out of eight children will not survive cancer.
