Megan Koch is the owner of Rusted Roots Boutique in Paducah. This former surgical tech has traded in her latex gloves for some designer ones. She is the proud mom of three precious dogs. iMeet this entrepreneur who gives a southern spin to her West Coast style!

Welcome to iMeet, Megan. Tell us about yourself...

I was born and raised in Bardwell, but I call Paducah home now. I graduated from West Kentucky Technical and Community College with an Associate’s Degree in Science. I worked in corporate retail while I went to school and then as a surgical tech for eight years before deciding to take the plunge and open my own business - Rusted Roots Boutique.

We hear you’re a farm girl…

Yes I am. Having been raised on a family farm, family is very important to me. I see my parents several times a week, even though I have moved away from Carlisle County.

At the moment my furry family includes three precious dogs - Jack, Mia and Wilson.

Tell us about your business, Rusted Roots Boutique...

Rusted Roots Boutique began when I took a bangle making class and decided to sell a few on the side while still working in the medical field. My goal is to bring West Coast fashions with a southern spin to my customers here in western Kentucky.

I opened my first store in Bardwell five years ago in my family’s farm office. My Bardwell store was such a success that I thought about adding another location in a larger market, but I wanted to stay close to home. That’s when I found the perfect location in Paducah and opened on March 22nd of this year.

I had been rolling around the idea of opening a store in Paducah and had been offered other locations in the past, but it just wasn’t the right timing. I tend to go on gut instinct in almost everything I do, and it usually pays off. I knew that I had to choose a location that sat right with me based on instinct and vision.

I first set up a booth at Barbecue on the River last year and Matt Moore, with Wildcat Real Estate LLC, stopped by. He looked around for a while and then asked if I would be interested in looking at a space he had available. Something about the space just felt right and I couldn’t have picked a better location for the Rusted Roots brand! Rusted Roots Boutique has landed at 3326 North Friendship Road, in Suite C.

How do you like being your own boss?

I’ve always wanted to be my own boss. I love the idea of being able to set my own schedule and plan my career. To be honest, I would have never thought that career would end up being in fashion, but I guess most girls have a passion for clothes. It just kind of made sense.

What sets your boutique apart from others in the area?

We strive to be unique in an ever-changing market. My staff and I ensure that every customer who enters the boutique gets the best customer service experience. I train my staff to always be kind, honest, and to anticipate the customer’s needs.

We’re currently working on a program to create a custom profile for our customers that will store their favorite styles and colors. Once launched, customers will be able to schedule one-on-one appointments with their favorite Rusted Roots staff member or have a selection of specifically curated items pulled for them to streamline their shopping experience.

Where do you find the items that you have in your boutique?

Most of the lines we carry in store are sourced on the West Coast; we focus on lines that combine southern style and urban industrial fashions.

Because we only purchase limited quantities of each style once the item is gone, it’s gone. I choose great quality items that can easily be incorporated into any wardrobe and worn for multiple seasons. I’m not one to go with the crowd and wanted to bring new and unique styles to the people of Paducah.

What are some style tips for fall that you could give our readers?

Mules are huge this season. Plum is always in style, but has made a major comeback for fall. (We're also loving dusty rose and olive!)

You can't ever go wrong with a chunky sweater and leggings or skinny jeans.

What do you like to do when you’re not at your store?

I have a lot of irons in the fire, so free time is hard to come by. When I do have a day to myself, I enjoy going antiquing and spending time with family and friends.

Describe a typical day for you...

Some days I trade in my high heels for work boots. If you can’t find me in the boutique, I’m probably on the family farm in Carlisle County.

What song makes you want to get up and dance?

Thats easy - Tina Tuner “The Best”!

Are you a morning person or a night owl?

Night owl for sure! I feel like I’m more creative in the evenings; that’s when I get my best work done.

We’re excited to have your unique style and creativity in western Kentucky Megan. Good luck with the business and  thanks for sharing your new venture on iList.
