With music in her heart and mind, Carson McKee is not your average violinist. She’s a UK student with a bright future in the entertainment industry. This lake loving girl likes to eat chicken and loves her home town – Symsonia. iMeet this talented performer for the Badgett Playhouse!
Welcome to iMeet Caron. Tell us about yourself...
I grew up in the small town of Symsonia – and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I graduated from Graves County High in 2018. I recently moved to Lexington, Kentucky to pursue a degree at the University of Kentucky. I love everything about it, but there is no place like home.
Symsonia is a great town. I remember walking down to the corner store (gas station), getting a Popsicle, and walking back home. My grandparents live about two miles from our house and I spent most of my days fishing in their pond or playing in the creek - when I wasn’t playing music.
How did you get interested in music?
My grandfather is probably who I owe most of who I am today to. He’s a great musician and an even better person. Every Tuesday, he used to host a music jam out in his garage. No matter how bad I was, everyone would always tell me how good I had done. They helped me find a confidence I never knew I had.
Tell us about your family…
I have the greatest family! I’m the middle sibling of two brothers. Clint, who just turned 16, Connor is 22, and I’m about to turn 20.
My dad is the funniest person I know. I admire his work ethic, determination, and will to succeed.
My mom has the greatest heart and is the type of person that everyone needs in their life. We have one border collie, Sadie. She is wild! I may not always be a fan of her, but she’ll never leave your side.
Where do you work and what do you do?
I currently work as staff violin, vocals, actress, dancer (or whatever else they need me to do) at the Badgett Playhouse in Grand Rivers. On the side, I tour with a variety of bands throughout the US.
How did you get to Badgett Playhouse?
Before I came here, I performed at The Kentucky Opry. I spent most of my early performing days there and owe them much of my success. Matt Lyerla, one of the greatest guitar players I know, asked me if I had ever been to the Badgett Theater. Matt gave me the owner’s number. I auditioned, played the show that night, and the rest is history.
What do you love about performing?
I’ve always been on the lookout for new opportunities have a passion for performing. I dream of making it big one day. I love the mystery of what an opportunity may hold.
What does a usual day in your life consist of?
I just finished my freshman year at the University of Kentucky. When in school, I wake up between 7:30 -9 am and go to class until around 3:30 pm. Then I try to go for a run or do some sort of physical activity.
Around 5 pm and I begin homework. I’m also in Alpha Delta Pi Sorority and have meetings for that. Around 10 pm, hit the library to study or catch up on assignments until around 2 am. Then I wrap things up and get ready for bed.
When school is out, I usually sleep in as long as my schedule will let me, waking up and going straight to work out. Prepare for a gig, then usually finish the night with a show, go to bed, get up, and do it all over again. The coolest life!
What do you love most about your job?
What isn’t fun about my job? I cannot imagine doing anything different. I get to travel and play music. It doesn’t get much better than that!
I started playing the violin at the age of three, and my music took off from there. I love my job because I love the atmosphere of the industry. I absolutely love interacting with the audience, laughing with my bandmates, and learning from every musician.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I like to be active and spend every second of my free time outside. Running, biking, hiking, or just laying in the sun, I love it all. My family is into watersports. During the summer, one of my favorite things to do is to go to the lake and wake surf, wake board, ski, or tube. Many of my friends live away from here. If I ever have a long weekend off, I love traveling to see them.
What are your favorite bands or concerts you’ve seen?
I’m an incredibly big fan of country music. I’ve been to countless concerts - Kenny Chesney, Dierks Bentley, Lorretta Lynn, Clint Black, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, The Oak Ridge Boys, and numerous others. I even opened the show for some! I adore incredible artists such as Lucie Silvas, Anderson East, John Mayer, Dave Matthews, Justin Bieber, and Drake. Each have put on performances that I will never forget.
Do you have a favorite food?
Chicken. Why? Because it’s hard to mess up a chicken!
Is there something about you that few people know?
I recently found out that I’m a wizard on the kazoo. Bill Minihan let me play it in the show as soon as I showed him!
